İnsanoğluna ev sahipliği yapan bu dünyada ayrıca fantastik hayvanlar ve doğaüstü ruhlar buluyor. bu ruhlar; hava, su, toprak ve ateşten oluşuyor. aynı zamanda insanoğlu 4 ırka ayrılmıştır. hava göcebeleri, ateş ulusu, toprak krallığı, su kabilesidir. her ırkta "bükücü" adı verilen özel insanlar kendi elementlerini kontrol etme yeteneğine sahiptir. bu bükme stileri özel dövüş sanatlari ile birleşir.

4 doğaüstü ruhuda yönetebilen tek usta, avatardır. zamanında dünyada dengeyi sağlayan kisi, birden bire ortadan yok olur, ve ateş ulusu savaş ilan eder. kendisine karşı gelebilecek tüm kabilelere saldırıp, yokeder. Ateş Ulusu, avatarın yokluğunda tüm dünyaya tek başına hükmetmeye karar verir. tüm ulus inançlıdır ve avatarın dönüşünü bekler. Ateş Ulusu için zafere az kalmışken, su kabilesi cıvarlarında bir buz kütlesinin içinde birileri vardır. İki kardeş -katara, sokka- onu o buz kitlesinin içinden kurtarırlar. Kurtardıkları kişinin bükücü tekniğindende anlaşıldığı gibi kendisi hava bükmektedir. Ve bekleyiş sona erer. Avatar döndüğü zaman tüm kötülükleri giderip, dünyada yeniden barışı sağlayacağına inanıyorlar.
